Default Buying used car

I planned to purchase a small used car. Would appreciate advise on the following:
1. I am looking for a small car about $20000 that I can use for a year and then sell it off without losing too much, what car would you recommend?
2. Is it safe to buy directly from the car owner?
3.Can you recommend a used car dealer in Ipoh?
4. Can you recommend a reliable mechanic in Ipoh?
5. Would it be better to buy the car in KL?
Many thanks in anticipation.

Not so sure whether this information is useful to you . A friend just told me that she bought a brand new Kancil 850 cc for only RM24k very recently.

No matter what, get an independent party like a reliable mechanic or AAM to check the car first. Costs a member RM50 and a non-member RM100 only. This is the least u should do before committing.

A 2 year old Kancil should cost below RM20K lor. Reasonably new car which should require minimum maintenance, fuel economical and fetches good resale value. Saving on depreciation compared to buying new.

If you do any driving on the highway, or any high speed driving at all, stay away from a Kancil. Small cars might not be too safe in accidents. Kancils are the worst, although I think the 40 year old [design] brand new Iswaras are not much better.

Get a 2nd hand Kelisa at least, or perhaps a Wira/Satria 1.3. They should not be too far out of your budget range.

If you can find one in good condition, maybe a 8-10year old Corolla might be a good buy.

No problem. Just realised nobody answered the rest of your questions.

2. Is it safe to buy directly from the car owner?

Yes, why not? Price will be cheaper than from 2nd hand dealer and most probably a private seller will be less knowledgeable in dressing up the car to hide problems with it.

3.Can you recommend a used car dealer in Ipoh?

Sorry,... I don't know any personally. But my thinking is that they're all the same. Don't trust them too much.

4. Can you recommend a reliable mechanic in Ipoh?

Can, but only if you don't call me if he doesn't turn out to be as reliable as I thought.

5. Would it be better to buy the car in KL?

Does it matter? But KL probably has more choice, but right now the 2nd hand car market is very soft everywhere.

If RM20k is ur budget, why not get:

Test drive it with no strings attached..... Quite surprised myself, no rust.....

It's within your budget and much better at crash tests
