Question Ipoh food are more expensive than Penang, do you agree?

My friend told me he found Ipoh food are more expensive than Penang. He said a cup of coffee is only RM 1.00 in Penang but it is RM 1.40 in Ipoh. That is 40% more.

The worst thing is, the pay in Ipoh is 20 to 30% lower compare to Penang. So why is it Ipoh food are more expensive? Any idea?

We have to ask the Ipoh Coffee Shop association. They are the ones who raise the prices of our cuppa. They also determine rental of the stalls which impact the noodle sellers' costs. I think users have to start boycotting to bring the prices down.

Are we comparing apple with apple? For consistency the price sampling must be from almost same category e.g. both the prices of coffee is taken from a roadside stall.

In general, most food prices in normal shops in Ipoh are cheaper than many major cities in Malaysia. However, in Penang, there are some isolated shops where the price can be ridiculously low. Only the Penangnites know where.

There are very few roadside stalls in Ipoh. Even the stalls under the big trees are not cheap.

The neighborhood towns for e.g. Bercham, Menglembu & Botani Garden, the food there are almost as expensive as city centre if not higher. At one time, when some shops at city centre were charging RM 1.30 for a cup of coffee, the neighborhood shops already charging RM 1.40.

The way I know it, Ipoh foods taste better than Penang.

So if you want quality, you pay for it, right?

For certain food, I think Penang is better. I tried the prawn mee at a store near Jelutong market. The taste is so original I don't think you can find in Ipoh. The best thing is the price is only RM 3.00.

The shops in Tourist hotspots would charge higher and outstation folks would still go. But it's at the suburban areas like Menglembu and Bercham that the prices of coffee and food should not be so high. It must be just overall increases in rental by shopowners. As far as I know rental for houses and rooms in Ipoh area and surrounding have also gone up lately. What more with outstation workers needing to stay near STation 18 etc.

It is not easy to launch a campaign to boycott those stores which are expensive. I think it is more practical to introduce to the public those stores in Ipoh which have good food and with reasonable price. This will encourage others to lower their prices.

What do you think?

Yes, agree that Ipoh food is slightly more expensive than Pg. However housing in Pg is a lot a lot more pricey. (even more than KL in some parts). Perhaps that is why the pay in Pg is better.
