Default Mambang DiAwan

Mambang DiAwan. Fairies in the Cloud? Sounds out of this world, doesn't it?

Anyone knows how Mambang DiAwan got its name? Is there some local myth or legend locked in that name somewhere in its distant past?

If so, pray tell.

How can this be? No one in the whole of Perak knew anything about Mambang DiAwan? How disappointing!

Perhaps we can loosely extrapolate from its given name?

Firstly, I'm thinking ...

Mambang DiAwan started off as a *Malay village. (Malay name so ...)

Am I wrong, anyone?

There was an article talking about this village in NST. You may read the story here.

Thanks for the link, Ms Forum Admin.

I was wrong. Mambang DiAwan is a Chinese new village. Here's two versions of how Mambang DiAwan got her name:
Quote:
  1. It is said that Mambang Di Awan (Fairies in the Clouds), came about after George Maxwell, a British colonial officer, claimed that a mambang had come down from Gunung Bujang Melaka, a hill nearby, and then stayed there.
  2. Another version says that the name stuck after several tin miners, who were resting under some trees after a long, hard day at work, spotted what looked like fairies moving among the clouds.
The story went on to say that the miners "spoke" to the fairies and asked them to move the clouds above their heads so that they could be sheltered from the sweltering heat.

Since we're on the subject of fairies, let me share another story regarding a cave in Sarawak aptly called the Fairy Caves.

This cave is located a couple of hours drive from Kuching and there are a couple of things I remembered about the place:
  1. You get to see the Sultan of Sarawak's humble abode enroute. It is a wooden yellow shack marked by a huge yellow umbrella outside the entrance.
  2. Wild orchids grew by the side of the highway.
  3. When you came within sight of the caves, you travel down a road with towering trees on both sides providing a fairylike canopy above you. It is at this point that my *story begins.
*According to local legend, a group of natives were resting at this spot when they fell into a deep slumber. How they got to where they were is lost to me due to the passage of time. In any case, when the natives awoke, they found themselves in the caves beyond. They interacted with the fairies in the cave, and cut a wooden passage up the hill into the caves above where they returned regularly.

The access to the Fairy Caves were soon replaced with cement steps but the original wooden passage or whatever remains of it can still be seen today.
