For me it's a phone first and foremost (it's actually lighter and less expensive [at launch] than my SE K800 [and most of the newer phones, for that matter]), which happily happens to be a fully loaded Windows mobile touchscreen PDA as well.

Since I was looking for a new phone to replace my increasingly wonky Samsung D500 and my mobile service contract expired earlier this year, this was a no-brainer. Practically all the Samsung Ultra, SE K8XX / W8XX and Nokia N9X phones were heavier and more expensive.

I was initially thinking of waiting 6-9 months for the iPhone. I had figured Apple mighn't sim-lock the iPhone in Asia, but the 'ship-back-for-battery-replacement' thing really put me off. I don't fancy having to foot the bill for Apple to (in essence) recall their phones, for what is really a design oversight. At the end of the day, I'm not as loaded as the jobless but very loaded first son-in-law, Malaysia's first iPhone connoisseur.

I was considering 838Pro until when I saw Touch reviewed on one of the pda site but I have few concerns. My primary usage will be for instant messaging, skype and short emails. Hope you can help me to check it out.

1. Is WinMobile 6 compatible with WinXP applications like trillian?

2. Without keypad, it is convenient to instant message / email replying?

3. After overclocking beyond 200mhz, is it working with Skype? I remember skype required 400mhz for it.

Thanks in advance.

No, in the sense you can't install XP applications into WM6. But there are WM versions of many XP programs which use compatible working files and formats eg. office documents created in XP's Office 2003 for eg. can be read/edited by Office Mobile.

No, if you are limited to WM6's standard keyboard, which has tiny, tiny keys. But there's a program called Phonepad which is a full sized T9 phone keypad for HTC touchscreens. I'm using it now and I can actually sms faster than using a conventional keypad because the Phonepad is more responsive to light touches.

You can get it below:

If you really like full QWERTY keyboards, I think got lah but you're still limited by real estate (2.8" screen) at the end of the day.

Apparently skype works on 200mhz TI OMAP processors without overclocking. If I remember correctly, this thread has some postings from forumers who've used skype on the Touch.

It's a lot of pages, but try to search skype&touch etc.

It's in the very first post. You need to register first to DL though.

When I almost wanted to sell off my Dopod 838Pro before resale price drop further, I found the solution to make my pda phone more user friendly. Most of the freewares listed at http://www.wm6software.net/ are great and I start to like my pda phone again, it is pretty close to iPhone user friendliness now.

Here are some of the good one

1. iFonz 0.9.8
2. Cootek Touchpal
3. EQO.com / Mundu - multi network instant messenger
4. iContact
5. iPhone Slider
6. S2U2 (formely Slide2Unlock)
7. Google Map Mobile
8. S2V - Photo Gallery
9. HTC Action Screen
10. One Touch Organizer

But one thing for sure, your battery run out very fast.

Now, the earphone speaker (ie. not the speakerphone speaker) has developed a problem. It was sometimes working, sometimes not working (no sound). Symptomatic of a dry joint problem. Now it's developed a buzzing static sound when it's working, making it hard to hear during calls.

I have to say I'm a bit sick of the Touch.
