Question Umno reprimands Youth wing leaders for speeches on race

In an unprecedented move, party warns three members over their fiery comments

By Carolyn Hong
The Straits Times

THE ruling Umno party yesterday did something that it has never done before - it reprimanded three of its leaders for their speeches to the party assembly two weeks ago.

Prime Minister Abdullah Badawi said Umno's management committee has given 'stern advice' to the three as their speeches were deemed to have gone overboard, and could harm race relations.

He said they were warned in the strongest terms to take care when making speeches so that they do not risk breaching the law.

'They have said that they will comply with our advice,' he told reporters after chairing the Umno supreme council meeting yesterday.

The management committee, which comprises the party's top leaders, had summoned the three to give an explanation last week.

Datuk Seri Abdullah did not name them but it is believed that they are Umno Youth information chief Datuk Azimi Daim, Datuk Hashim Suboh from Perlis, and Mr Hasnoor Sidang Husin from Malacca.

Their speeches, which implied threats of violence, had sparked an uproar among the non-Malay communities.

Datuk Hashim was reported to have asked when Umno Youth chief Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Hussein would use the keris that he had unsheathed.

The comment referred to the Youth chief's tradition of wielding the dagger at the assembly, a sign of the Malay warrior spirit.

Mr Hasnoor had allegedly proclaimed Umno's willingness 'to risk lives and bathe in blood', while Datuk Azimi was reported to have said that 'when tension rises, the blood of Malay warriors will run in our veins'.

The opposition Chinese-based Democratic Action Party had lodged several police reports over the speeches which it deemed to be seditious.

The police are investigating, but the matter is expected to be closed as Umno has issued a reprimand.

This is the first time that Umno has taken action based on police reports and complaints by the opposition and non-Malay communities over the years on the same issue.

The complaints have previously been brushed aside.

Moreover, Datuk Seri Abdullah and other government leaders have been making great efforts to contain the fallout from the assembly, as racial tensions are on the rise.

Datuk Seri Abdullah said yesterday he hoped that no further problems would arise.

He also said the party would decide later whether it will continue to broadcast live over television the proceedings of its assembly next year. The assembly was televised live for the first time this year.

On a report that former deputy premier Anwar Ibrahim was planning to contest in the next general election, Datuk Seri Abdullah said he was not concerned about it.

'He can say anything he wants, we will decide when the elections will be, and we can face anyone,' he said.

Datuk Seri Anwar is legally barred from running for elections until the five-year ban arising from his conviction for corruption expires in April 2008. He was released from prison in 2004.

It has been speculated that the government would call for elections in early 2008 to avoid giving the former Umno leader a chance to contest.

Hahahaha....another example of UMNO-we-are-king-mentality in action...

If it's MCA or Gerakan saying such things, nothing less than a police arrest, ISA action, national apologies etc will be demanded by the likes of Kerismuddin, SIL etc.

What a joke......

Eh, didn't expel them for giving the party a bad reputation. Slap on the wrists and bum, again. How about a hefty fine witht the donation going to young handicapped children instead?
Money talks, but all it ever says is goodbye
