Default Mt Gongga trek, Sichuan, China - june 2010

Just finished trekking Mt Gongga, the highest mountain in Sichuan @ 7500m.

Summit of Mt Gongga shrouded in clouds

The weather was cool and rainy (it rained all nights). Trek was strenuous but rewarding.

Smile Journey to Hailougou

We started from Chengdu and took a bus to Hailougou, a resort on the East side of Gongga range. This resort has a glacier and hot springs and ranged from 2500 - 3400m high. We spend two days for acclimatization.

2 1/2 mile (4.1 km) long Er'lang Tunnel, saved us a lot of ascend during bus ride

Default Journey to Hailougou 2

After crossing the tunnel, we arrived at Luding, a quaint town nestled in a valley.

The communists captured this bridge during the Long March and it had entered their folklore.

Default Hailougou

Finally reached Moxi, town at the base of Hailougou. Took a special bus up to the second yingdi (camp). The second Yingdi is where the hot springs are located at 2400m. Futher buses can take one up to the fourth yingdi at 3000m and then either trek up or take a cable car to the glacier.

Moxi town. Many tourists choose to stay here instead of futher up because of costs.

A beautiful river runs through it.

Thanks for sharing, CCW. This is truly beautiful. How long does the journey take from Chengdu to Hailougou? Did you do all your travel arrangements from Malaysia, including the accomodation?

Hi Hop Hop,

The journey by bus took about 4 - 5 hours but we stop at Er Lang Tunnel and Luding. The trip was organize by a Singaporean friend from Singapore itself and he used a local Chengdu agent for the arrangements. Costs was S$1,300 without airfare.

Hailougou is worth visiting even without trekking around Gongga!

Default Hailougou Hot Springs

There were numerous pools fed by underground springs. The air smelt faintly of sulphur and there were clouds of steam around the resort.

Maybe it was my imagination, but this trip I suffered less from cold sores and had not much skin problems after dipping in the pools for two days.

Pools were labeled 38 - 42 degrees Celcius. Water is clean and refreshing!

CCW, thank you for sharing your wonderful photos with us. Its a joy, thank you so very much.

Did you and your friends go trekking with a guide? You spoke about acclimatisation, did you previously suffer from altitude sickness? Cold sore and skin problems? From too much walking?

Default Hailougou glacier

The next day we took another bus up to the fourth yingdi at 3000m and then trek 400m up to the glacier. Most tourists will take the cable car.

Hi PH,

Yes we went with a wonderful 21 year old girl Sio Swan who is studying physical training at Chengdu Sports College. Will post some of her pictures later. All of us love her, being spontaneous, sporting with a 'can do' attitude.

I had mild symptoms like loss of appetite and sleep in the past and the symptoms were better this trip but we only ascend up to 4600m compared to 5400m in the past.

Skin problems with the cold and strong sun is always a problem for me at high attitudes but it is a small price for the beauty of nature.
