Datuk Thong Fah Chong said the Government did not cut the budget for the runway extension project for the Sultan Azlan Shah Airport.
He pointed out that the RM36mil project was awarded to Sunway construction through an open tender.
“Sunway Construction is a credible and reputable company that can do the project at almost half the initial estimated cost of RM60mil,” he said, adding that about a dozen companies had vied for the project.
Kong said construction work had begun.
The project, expected to be completed by end-2012, includes extending the runway by 200m from the present 1.8km and upgrading the terminal.
“The airport will be able to cater to Boeing 737 and Airbus A320 planes once it is operational.
“Flights can also be expanded to international cities such as Hong Kong, Guangzhou, Bangkok and even Jakarta,” he said.
